Andrew Strauss’s troubled start to the season continued, as he was dismissed without addition to his overnight 6 at The Rose Bowl. He has now amassed just 62 runs in five innings, as Middlesex were made to fight for the ascendancy in reply to Hampshire’s first-innings 275. From a precarious 27 for 3, it was left to Owais Shah and Ed Joyce to lift Middlesex’s performance. They added 166 for the fourth wicket, but when both fell in quick succession to the wiles of Shane Warne, the innings was ripped wide open. Warne finished with 3 for 73 as Middlesex stole a four-run lead, but by the close it was Hampshire who were back in the mire, having lost both openers in 14 overs of their second innings.

On a day that was overshadowed by Surrey’s ball-tampering charge, Jason Gallian and Stephen Fleming added 206 for the third wicket to build on Nottinghamshire’s crushing dominance at The Oval. For both men, it was their second big century stand in consecutive matches this season, following hot on the heels of their 186-run partnership against Sussex last week, but this time, it was Fleming’s turn to put in the big performance, as he raced to an unbeaten 223 from 222 balls, with 27 fours and five sixes. David Hussey provided explosive support with 74 from 66 balls, as Surrey’s chastened attack was taken to the cleaners.

Glamorgan were fighting to avoid their third consecutive defeat of the season, after an improbable 10-over spell from Alex Gidman had cut a swathe through their first innings and sent them tumbling towards the follow-on. From a comfortable 40 for 0, Glamorgan were reduced to 48 for 4, with three players clean-bowled by Gidman and a fourth, David Hemp, trapped lbw by Jon Lewis for a duck. Gidman then struck again to extract Matthew Elliott for 38 to finish with 4 for 47, and though the tail, marshalled by Mark Wallace (52) and Alex Wharf (35) did well to reach 239, Upul Chandana picked off his victims for figures of 3 for 73. In their second innings, however, Glamorgan fared much better, with Elliott unbeaten on 45 at the close.
