Sheffield Wednesday are expected to be a little busy on deadline day, but one player won’t be leaving, at least according to Sheffield Star journalist Alex Miller. It is believed that the south Yorkshire outfit are closing in on Crystal Palace striker Connor Wickham. When asked on Twitter if goalkeeper Kieren Westwood would exit before 11pm this evening, Miller played down the chances by relaying fresh news from manager Garry Monk.He said:
The 35-year-old veteran has slipped down the pecking order at Hillsborough in recent months, relinquishing the number one spot to Cameron Dawson.
Westwood has been absent from the matchday squad for 14 straight matches in all competitions now and was only named on the bench twice in that time, per Transfermarkt.
His chances of regaining the starting spot between the sticks has diminished further this week after Dawson signed a new long-term extension.
Monk’s comments about the 24-year-old’s contract are hardly much of an encouragement for Westwood either. He added: “These are the type of players you need to build around; young, hungry players. He has got the desire to do well and the right attitude, so we are delighted with that.”

The two-time member of the PFA Championship Team of the Year has 18 months to run on his current deal, but given his lack of involvement under the Owls boss, his chances of sticking around are surely wearing thin.
Although, it seems as if any potential exit will have to wait until the summer after this latest update.
