Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs in talks with Ivan Perisic’s agent; may benefit Steven Bergwijn

Tottenham Hotspur are holding talks with Ivan Perisic’s representatives about a move in the summer ahead of the 2020/21 Premier League season.

According to FC Inter News, Bayern Munich have failed to activate a permanent deal for Perisic, and he could now be available in the transfer window.

Although Bayern retain the option to sign him for £20m, the Bavarians are only interested in extending his loan spell for another season, which hasn’t gone down well with his parent club.

Reports have now emerged that his agent is negotiating with Spurs over a possible move.

Earlier this month, Fussball Transfers claimed Tottenham and Manchester United are interested in the Croatian, and this news may benefit Steven Bergwijn.

After arriving at Inter Milan from VfL Wolfsburg in 2015, Perisic has spent the past season on loan at the Allianz Arena.

Despite his age, the 31-year-old has scored 4 goals and created 3 assists in the Bundesliga so far, taking 1.9 shots and providing 1 key pass per game (via WhoScored).

It is worth noting he sustained an ankle injury which ruled him out for a chunk of games prior to the pandemic, but he has proven to be dependable at Bayern, as the German giants hope to keep him for the foreseeable future.

In the meantime, Bergwijn gave fans a glimpse of what he has to offer before he was ruled out of the team’s last game against RB Leipzig after picking up an ankle injury. The Dutchman has netted 2 goals in 5 games in the Premier League, notably scoring on his home debut against reigning champions Manchester City (Transfermarkt).

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho previously wanted Perisic at his old club Manchester United and it seems the Lilywhites’ chances of signing the veteran hang on whether or not they qualify for European football.

The Portuguese has been hampered by injuries to his options out wide. Bergwijn and Son Heung-min have only recently recovered from injury setbacks, which will surely gives Spurs a boost, as they had slumped to several poor results in their absence.

Bearing this in mind, Perisic can provide cover for the wide forwards, as he could share the workload with the 22-year-old to reduce the risk of injury. Moreover, he has bags of experience at the top levels of the game, including playing and scoring in a World Cup final, and could act as a mentor to the Dutch international in the future.

However, Inter value the winger at £20m, and it remains to be seen if Daniel Levy will be willing to splash the cash on a player who is arguably heading towards the twilight of his career.
